For a lot of Americans, Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer. Many people attend parades, go to the beach, or have barbeques with family and friends- which can be hosted right here at Flats 130 at Constitution Square. But at its core, Memorial Day is a yearly remembrance for those who have sacrificed their lives in the military service.
Each year, throughout a television broadcast, a Memorial Day Parade is broadcasted as a tribute to our Nation’s fallen heroes. Presented by Boeing returns live to Constitution Avenue this Memorial Day, May 29, at 2:00 PM. Whether you come to watch live, in-person, or on television from around the country, or the world, the story of American sacrifice is shared from Washington DC to Flats 130 at Constitution Square and beyond.
The Annual Memorial Day Parade takes place alongside Constitution Ave NW and lasts until roughly 5 pm. The Parade features marching bands, floats, performers, and veterans promenading down the Constitution! The steps of the National Archives are a very popular place to watch the parade, so make sure to arrive early.

]]>Earth Day is an event that takes place every year on April 22 that demonstrates support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, Earth Day now includes a wide range of events coordinated by EarthDay.org.
Here are the six ways to do Earth Day this year. The first is to increase your climate literacy and promote the education of climate literacy for students. Second, end plastics. Plastic pollution is one of the most important environmental problems facing us. Third, donate as little as one dollar to plant a tree.
Next, use your voting power to protect our environment. Then, join a global cleanup campaign. Find a local event to clean up your communities, beaches, rivers, lakes, trails, and parks. Finally, shop sustainable fashion. Fight fast fashion by shopping secondhand or purchasing from eco-friendly stores and shops.
These are the six ways being focused on this year for Earth Day 2023. We encourage all of our residents to participate in Earth Day in as many ways as possible. Also, Flats 130 at Constitution Square urges our community to continue their Earth Day activities all year long.
For example, participate in a community cleanup every month, use only reusable water bottles, or shop at sustainable brands as often as possible.

]]>Of course, a bar crawl is a fun way to celebrate the holiday. Some include the St. Patrick’s Day Bar Crawl, The DMV Biggest St. Patty’s Day Party, and The Leprechaun Leap. If any of those don’t seem to suit your fancy, there are plenty of other parties and bar crawls out there. Find the perfect one for you!
March is then also the time for spring cleaning. Not only will a clean and organized space look great, but it will also improve moods, decrease stress levels, and increase creativity. It is the ideal time to put away winter essentials and prepare your space for the warm weather.
Along with the usual chores, use this time to properly put away anything you only need for winter, like heavy coats. Then turn your attention to deep cleaning. Cleaning parts of your space that are often forgotten. Such as baseboards, shower curtains, and window dressings.
See spring cleaning as an opportunity for a fresh start, not a daunting task.

]]>The first Thanksgiving dates back to 1621, when the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag shared an autumn feast. Then, for more than two centuries, Thanksgiving was celebrated on different days by the US colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.
According to the National Turkey Federation, 90% of American households eat turkey for Thanksgiving- whether it be roasted, baked, or deep-fried. Other traditional foods include stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.
Parades have also become a common aspect of the holiday. Presented by Macy’s department store since 1924, New York City’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is the largest and most famous, attracting up to 3 million in-person spectators along its 2.5-mile route and drawing an enormous television viewing crowd.
As in the name, Thanksgiving is dedicated to giving thanks. So, this year take an extra moment to figure out what you are most grateful for.
